What does it mean to design for indoor outdoor spaces?
Living in California, we have the option of developing that space in between our indoor living and the openness of the great outdoors. We call it a transitional space. That area that is a little of both. Our long season of mild weather makes creating the space that brings the outdoors closer a practical investment. Increasing our living space is something many families are seeking, with our homes continuing to play a more essential role in our new hybrid work environment.
According to a recent report from the Mental Health Foundation, “Our relationship with nature – how much we notice, think about and appreciate our natural surroundings – is a critical factor in supporting good mental health and preventing distress.”
Marin, Sonoma and Napa Counties offer an amazing array of high-quality natural open spaces, with trails, vistas and waterways. However, there is something intimate and immediate in being able to move from your living room, kitchen or bedroom to a terrace or deck designed to accommodate a complete outdoor living area.
The design of the transitional space can take the shape of an additional room that may be protected with on overhead ceiling and glass doors. With the advent of completely retractable sliding doors, there is the feeling of openness to an area that can be protected when needed.
Or the design can be as simple as building a wooden deck or landscaping a flat area of your yard to allow for a patio with furniture for seating and eating. Verandas that wrap around a portion of a home are also a great addition for enjoying the outdoors.
